Itinerary

Note: This itinerary is designed to run in one direction, but it can easily be reversed to begin in Cardiff and finish in the Bannau Brycheiniog if preferred.

Day One: Croeso i Gymru – Welcome to Wales

Your adventure begins in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), a land of green valleys, open hills, and starlit skies. Settle into your accommodation and take in the scenery that will frame the first part of your journey. Tomorrow, the whistle of a steam engine will mark the start of your travels by rail.

Overnight: Bannau Brycheiniog area

Day Two: Steam Through the Bannau Brycheiniog

Begin with a nostalgic ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway, where restored steam locomotives trace a line along the Pontsticill Reservoir. From the comfort of your carriage, watch forests, meadows, and mountain vistas unfold before you. After your journey, spend the afternoon exploring the national park at leisure — from hidden waterfalls to quiet villages tucked into the hills.

Overnight: Bannau Brycheiniog area

Day Three: Through Mid Wales to the Mountains of the North

Travel north today, pausing at Bala for a tranquil ride on the Bala Lake Railway, a charming narrow-gauge line that skirts Wales’s largest natural lake. Look out for red kites circling above or ospreys fishing in the waters. Continue on to your hotel in the foothills of Yr Eryri (Snowdonia), ready for days of exploration.

Overnight: North Wales

Day Four: Villages, Legends, and Mountain Rails

This morning, visit Beddgelert, a storybook village named after the legendary hound of Prince Llywelyn. Then continue to Blaenau Ffestiniog, once the slate capital of the world. From here, step aboard the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway for one of the most spectacular steam journeys in Britain, winding through the mountains of Yr Eryri with unforgettable views at every turn.

Overnight: North Wales

Day Five: Castles and the Summit of Yr Wyddfa

Stand in awe at Caernarfon Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose walls have witnessed centuries of Welsh history. After exploring the town’s cobbled streets and waterfront, take your place on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. The train climbs steadily to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest peak in Wales, where views stretch across mountains and sea on a clear day.

Overnight: North Wales

Day Six: From North Wales to the Coast of Mid Wales

Today’s route takes you south along the coast, with a stop at Portmeirion — an enchanting Italianate village of pastel houses, ornamental gardens, and sea views. After time to wander and enjoy lunch, continue to the seaside town of Aberystwyth, where culture, history, and coastal charm await.

Overnight: Aberystwyth

Day Seven: Devil’s Bridge and Coastal Flavours

Board the Vale of Rheidol Railway for a steam-powered climb to Devil’s Bridge, home to dramatic waterfalls wrapped in myth and legend. Back in Aberystwyth, visit the National Library of Wales before travelling on toward the coast. Pause in Aberaeron to sample traditional fish and chips or the town’s famous honey ice cream, before reaching the vibrant capital of Cardiff.

Overnight: Cardiff

Day Eight: Cardiff – The Capital on the Bay

Discover Cardiff, where heritage meets modern flair. Wander through Victorian arcades filled with independent shops, or take a waterbus to Cardiff Bay, once the beating heart of the coal trade and now a lively waterfront of theatres, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. Cardiff Castle, in the city centre, offers a final reminder of Wales’s long and fascinating history.

Overnight:
Cardiff

Day Nine: Hwyl fawr – Farewell to Wales

After breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to Wales. Depart with memories of steam trains echoing through valleys, castles standing proud against the skyline, and warm welcomes in every town and village.
