Day One: Arrival in Wales – Gateway to the Bannau Brycheiniog

Your Welsh journey begins in the south, as you travel into the spectacular landscapes of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). After settling into your accommodation, take time to explore the beauty that surrounds you. Gentle trails lead through rolling hills, tranquil streams, and open moorland, while the rugged peaks provide a dramatic backdrop to your first evening. Pause to breathe in the fresh mountain air, listen to the quiet of the countryside, and enjoy a warm Welsh welcome that sets the tone for the days ahead.

Overnight: Brecon area

Day Two: Waterfalls and Castles of the Bannau Brycheiniog

Spend the day discovering the treasures of the national park. A short walk reveals a series of enchanting waterfalls, cascading through mossy gorges and woodlands alive with birdsong. For a glimpse of history, visit the fairy-tale towers of Castell Coch or the dramatic ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle, perched high above the valley with sweeping views all around. Whether you prefer gentle rambles or atmospheric fortresses, today offers a blend of nature and heritage that captures the spirit of Wales.

Overnight: Brecon area

Day Three: Through the Borderlands to North Wales

This morning, journey north through the rolling hills, pausing in Hay-on-Wye — a literary haven famous for its bookshops and festival atmosphere. Continue into the lush valley town of Llangollen, where the River Dee winds its way past historic streets and lively cafés. A highlight here is the awe-inspiring Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where narrowboats float high above the countryside. From riverside strolls to sweeping panoramas, today carries you closer to the heart of North Wales.

Overnight: North Wales

Day Four: Peaks and Legends of Yr Wyddfa and Anglesey

Today is devoted to the dramatic landscapes of Yr Eryri (Snowdonia) and beyond. Drive through mountain passes framed by towering peaks, stopping in the charming village of Betws-y-Coed, surrounded by woodlands and waterfalls. Later, stand before mighty Caernarfon Castle, one of Wales’s most iconic fortresses, steeped in history and power. If time allows, cross the Menai Strait to Anglesey, where the island’s quiet beauty contrasts with the rugged mountains behind you. This is North Wales at its most unforgettable.

Overnight: North Wales

Day Five: Castles, Coastal Villages, and the Literary Soul of Wales

Bid farewell to North Wales and begin the journey southwards. Pause in Caernarfon’s bustling market town before visiting Portmeirion, a whimsical Italianate village tucked into a stunning coastal setting. Continue to Aberystwyth, a lively seaside town and home to the National Library of Wales. Here, you’ll find a treasure trove of manuscripts, maps, and photographs that celebrate the nation’s cultural heritage. Stroll along the promenade at sunset and let the waves of Cardigan Bay mark the end of your day.

Overnight: Aberystwyth area

Day Six: Coastal Beauty and the Pilgrim’s City

Follow the curve of the coastline, beginning in Aberaeron, where brightly painted Georgian houses frame a small harbour. Continue to St Davids, the smallest city in the UK, where its great cathedral rises in a peaceful valley, a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Later, head east to the colourful seaside town of Tenby, with its golden beaches, medieval town walls, and picturesque harbour. As evening falls, make your way to Cardiff, Wales’s dynamic capital, alive with culture, cuisine, and character.

Overnight: Cardiff

Day Seven: The Capital – Cardiff at Leisure

Discover Cardiff, a city that blends ancient history with modern vibrancy. Explore the grand halls and battlements of Cardiff Castle, rising in the heart of the city, and then step back through time at St Fagans, the open-air museum of Welsh life. Stroll through arcades filled with independent shops and cafés, or take in the energy of Cardiff Bay with its striking Millennium Centre, waterside restaurants, and lively atmosphere. On your final evening, raise a glass to Wales and the journey you’ve completed.

Overnight: Cardiff
